American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery

Board of Directors

The Board consists of 21 members which include 12 Directors, six Senior Directors, two Directors-Elect, and one Public Director. All Directors serve one seven-year term with most serving an additional three years as Senior Directors. The Public Director may serve two three-year terms.

Nominations come from the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. Each organization nominates six physicians two out of every three years and the Board elects two Director-Elects each year.

James D. Kang, MD

James D. Kang, MD, is President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has served as Treasurer and Chair of the ABOS Maintenance of Certification and Research Committees. Dr. Kang was elected to the Board in 2017. He is Thomas S. Thornhill, MD, and Karen N. Thornhill Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School, and Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he specializes in spine surgery.

Scott E. Porter, MD, MBA

Scott E. Porter, MD, MBA, is Vice President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and served as Chair of the ABOS Credentials Committee. Dr. Porter was elected to the Board in 2017. He is Vice Chair of Operations in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Prisma Health-Upstate where he specializes in bone and soft tissue tumors.

Kevin L. Garvin, MD

Kevin L. Garvin, MD, is President-Elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has served Chair of the ABOS Oral Examinations Committee. Dr. Garvin was elected to the Board in 2018. He is the L. Thomas Hood, MD Professor and Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, University of Nebraska, where he specializes in adult reconstruction surgery.

Wayne J. Sebastianelli, MD

Wayne J. Sebastianelli, MD, is Secretary of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has served as Chair of the ABOS Subspecialty Certification and Written Examination Committees. Dr. Sebastianelli was elected to the Board in 2018. He is the Kalenak Professor in Orthopaedics at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Medical Director, Penn State Sports Medicine, where he specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine.

Kyle J. Jeray, MD, is Treasurer of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Jeray was elected to the Board in 2021. He is Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Prisma Health-Update where he specializes in orthopaedic trauma.

He is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Pathology at Albany Medical Center where he serves as Director of Orthopedic Oncology.

Charles L. Nelson MD, is Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and serves as Chair of the ABOS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force and Chair of the ABOS Credentials Committee. He is the Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of Adult Reconstruction, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he specializes in adult reconstruction surgery.

Green Professor of Orthopaedics and Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Vanderbilt University, where he specializes in pediatric orthopaedics.

Ann E. Van Heest, MD, is Senior Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Van Heest was elected to the Board in 2015 and has served as Vice President and Chair of the ABOS Graduate Medical Education and Subspecialty Committees. She is Professor and Vice-Chair of Education, in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where she practices as a hand surgeon, specializing in pediatric upper extremity.
