Board of Directors

The Board consists of 21 members which include 12 Directors, six Senior Directors, two Directors-Elect, and one Public Director. All Directors serve one seven-year term with most serving an additional three years as Senior Directors. The Public Director may serve two three-year terms.

Nominations come from the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. Each organization nominates six physicians two out of every three years and the Board elects two Director-Elects each year.

Kevin L. Garvin, MD

Kevin L. Garvin, MD, is President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has served Chair of the ABOS Oral Examinations Committee. Dr. Garvin was elected to the Board in 2018. He is the L. Thomas Hood, MD Professor and Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, University of Nebraska, where he specializes in adult reconstruction surgery.

Wayne J. Sebastianelli, MD

Wayne J. Sebastianelli, MD, is Vice President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has served as Chair of the ABOS Subspecialty Certification and Written Examination Committees. Dr. Sebastianelli was elected to the Board in 2018. He is the Kalenak Professor in Orthopaedics at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Medical Director, Penn State Sports Medicine, where he specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine.

Charles L. Nelson, MD

Charles L. Nelson MD, is President-Elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has served as Chair of the ABOS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force and Chair of the ABOS Credentials Committee. Dr. Nelson was elected to the Board in 2019. He is the Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of Adult Reconstruction, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he specializes in adult reconstruction surgery.

Lisa A. Taitsman, MD, MPH

Seattle, WA | Secretary

Lisa A. Taitsman, MD, is Secretary of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has previously served as Chair of the ABOS Graduate Medical Education Maintenance of Certification Committees. Dr. Taitsman was elected to the Board in 2019. She is Professor of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine, where she specializes in orthopaedic trauma.

Kyle J. Jeray, MD

Kyle J. Jeray, MD, is Treasurer of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Jeray was elected to the Board in 2021. He is Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Prisma Health-Update where he specializes in orthopaedic trauma.

Loeb Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis where he specializes in hand and microvascular surgery.

Matthew R. DiCaprio, MD, is Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and as serves as Vice Chair of the ABOS Oral Examinations and Maintenance of Certification Committees. Dr. DiCaprio was elected to the Board in 2022. He is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Pathology at Albany Medical Center where he serves as Director of Orthopedic Oncology.

James R. Ficke, MD, is Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and services as Vice Chair of the ABOS Credentials Committee He is the Robert A. Robinson Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine, where he specializes in foot and ankle surgery and orthopaedic trauma.

Steven L. Frick, MD, is Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and serves as Chair of the ABOS Graduate Medical Education Committee. Dr. Frick was elected to the Board in 2022. He is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Atrium Health/OrthoCarolina and Associate Dean, Wake Forest University School of Medicine Charlotte. Dr. Frick specializes in pediatric orthopaedics.

He is President, and Orthopaedic Surgeon at North Point Orthopaedics where he specializes in spine surgery.

Brian R. Wolf, MD, MS, is Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and serves as Vice Chair of the ABOS Written Examination Committee. He is the Kim and John Callaghan Endowed Chair in Sports Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine.

McCollister Evarts Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where she specializes in shoulder and elbow surgery.

Frederick M. Azar, MD, is Senior Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Azar was elected to the Board in 2016 and has served as Vice President and Chair of the ABOS Oral Examination Committee. He is Chief of Staff of Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics and Professor at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering, where he specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine.

Scott E. Porter, MD, MBA, is Senior Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Porter was elected to the Board in 2017 and previously served as Vice President and as Chair of the ABOS Credentials Committee. He is Vice Chair of Operations in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Prisma Health-Upstate where he specializes in bone and soft tissue tumors.

Gregory A. Mencio, MD, is Senior Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Mencio was elected to the Board in 2015 and has served as President and Chair of the ABOS Credentials and Research Committees. He is Neil E. Green Professor of Orthopaedics and Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Vanderbilt University, where he specializes in pediatric orthopaedics.

Ann E. Van Heest, MD

Ann E. Van Heest, MD, is Senior Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Van Heest was elected to the Board in 2015 and has served as Vice President and Chair of the ABOS Graduate Medical Education and Subspecialty Committees. She is Professor and Vice-Chair of Education, in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where she practices as a hand surgeon, specializing in pediatric upper extremity.
