Martin Named Executive Medical Director of American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery
Chapel Hill, NC—The Board of Directors of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) has selected David F. Martin, MD as the Executive Medical Director of the ABOS. Martin, who started in his new position on October 1, has served as the Interim Executive Director of the ABOS since the retirement of Shepard R. Hurwitz, MD earlier this year. He served on the ABOS Board of Directors from 2005-2015 and was President of the Board in 2011-2012.
The Executive Medical Director is responsible for promoting activities that support the policy, purpose, and mission of the ABOS. Specific responsibilities include communication with candidates, diplomates, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and its member boards, professional societies, and the general public. The Executive Medical Director is a subject matter expert in the practice of orthopaedic surgery as well as in the development of high-stakes certification programs, and plays a crucial role in ABOS’s credentialing process.
“The Board conducted a nationwide search, and Dr. Martin’s knowledge and passion for the ABOS and its processes were evident during the interviewing process,” said Board President Larry Marsh, MD. “We are eager to have this prominent orthopaedic surgeon play a crucial role for the organization.”
Martin is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Wake Forest School of Medicine and the former Director of Sports Medicine at Wake Forest University. He served as the Wake Forest Demon Deacon’s Team Physician for 18 years and has treated amateur, college, and professional athletes. Martin will remain on the faculty of Wake Forest School of Medicine and continue to see patients and perform surgery there. Martin also has research interests which focus on running injuries, knee injuries, throwing injuries, and orthopaedic education. Martin graduated from Dartmouth College, received his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He completed Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowships at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic and the Union Memorial Hospital. Martin served a major in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Martin will work closely with Aaron White, Chief Operating Officer of the ABOS, who is responsible for the operational activities of the organization and the management of all ABOS employees, vendors, and contractors.
The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Inc. was founded in 1934 as a private, voluntary, nonprofit, independent organization to serve the best interests of the public and the medical profession. These interests are achieved through the ABOS by establishing standards for the education of orthopaedic surgeons. These standards are evaluated by the ABOS through examinations and practice evaluations.
